THIS DUPLEX APARTMENT LOCATED ON PARK AVENUE IN MANHATTAN IS THE PRODUCT OF TWO STACKED PREWAR APARTMENTS THAT WERE GUTTED AND REDESIGNED. THE CLIENTS ASKED FOR A HOME THAT WOULD BE BOTH A GLAMOROUS SETTING FOR FORMAL ENTERTAINING AND A COMFORTABLE ENVIRONMENT FOR THEIR GROWING FAMILY.
SITUATED ON A LOWER FLOOR AND LACKING NATURAL LIGHT, THE CHALLENGE WAS TO MAKE AN OTHERWISE DARK INTERIOR LUMINOUS. A DRAMATIC DOUBLE-HEIGHT OPENING WAS CARVED OUT IN THE FOYER, AND A GREIGE ONYX STAIRCASE WITH A CUSTOM JEAN ROYERE–INSPIRED RAILING IN ANTIQUED BRASS AND SILVER LEAF WAS INSTALLED. METALLIC FINISHES WERE INCORPORATED THROUGHOUT, FROM THE WALLS OF THE FOYER, WHICH WERE EMBEDDED WITH SPARKLING GROUND MICA, TO THE WOOD FLOORS FINISHED IN A SILVER WASH.
IN ADDITION TO THE GRAND LIVING AND DINING ROOMS ON THE LOWER LEVEL, THERE IS A STUDY AND A LARGE OPEN KITCHEN IN STAINLESS STEEL AND EBONY-FINISH AMERICAN BLACK WALNUT WHICH INCLUDES A BREAKFAST AREA WITH A LEATHER BANQUETTE. UPSTAIRS, THERE IS A SPACIOUS PRIMARY SUITE WITH A GENEROUS PRIMARY BATH TILED IN SPARKLING PLATINUM MOSAIC. COPIOUS STORAGE IS SEAMLESSLY INTEGRATED THROUGHOUT.
