THIS GARDEN LOFT, SITUATED IN A HISTORIC FORMER FACTORY IN THE HAMPTONS, PRESENTS A UNIQUE BLEND OF INDUSTRIAL CHARM AND MODERN ELEGANCE. THE COMPLEX, WHICH WAS ORIGINALLY CONSTRUCTED IN 1881, UNDERWENT A COMPREHENSIVE TRANSFORMATION INTO LUXURY CONDOMINIUMS WITH STATE-OF-THE-ART AMENITIES. MR ARCHITECTURE + DECOR WAS ENLISTED BY A RETURNING CLIENT TO MAKE A NEW HOME FOR HER THERE. BEING BROUGHT ON BOARD EARLY IN THE DEVELOPER’S PROCESS ALLOWED MR THE OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE SUBTLE ARCHITECTURAL MODFICIATIONS PRIOR TO WORKING ON THE INTERIORS.
ONE OF THE DEFINING FEATURES OF THE DEVELOPER’S APPROACH TO THIS PROJECT WAS THE PRESENTATION OF THE ORIGINAL EXPOSED BRICK WALLS BOTH INSIDE AND OUT. ADDITIONALLY, NEW WINDOWS WERE INSTALLED IN THEIR ORIGINAL RANDOMLY PLACED LOCATIONS, WHICH EMPHASIZES THE ADAPTIVE RE-USE OF THE STRUCTURE FROM FACTORY TO LIVING LOFTS. TO ACCOMMODATE THE CLIENT’S NOTABLE ART COLLECTION, MR INSERTED A NEW WALL IN THE OPEN PLAN, WHICH ALSO HELPED DEFINE A LIBRARY-DEN AND COZY NOOK FOR READING AND SLEEPING.
SEATING AND DINING AREAS WERE FURNISHED WITH UNIQUE ITEMS THAT COMPLEMENT THE BUILDING’S RICH ARCHITECTURAL HISTORY. PIECES INCLUDE THONET BENTWOOD DINING CHAIRS WITH A PROUVÉ TABLE, A CUSTOM HUTCH BY MARTINO GAMPER, TUBULAR, METAL-FRAMED SOFAS PAIRED WITH AN ALVAR AALTO WOOD COFFEE TABLE, AND CUSTOM QUILTED UPHOLSTERY. THE NEW HOME EMBODIES MR’S METICULOUS ATTENTION TO DETAIL, EVIDENT IN THE LAYOUT, FURNISHINGS, FINISHES AND MATERIALS, THAT TOGETHER CORRESPOND WITH THE CLIENT’S PERSONAL STYLE. IT IS AN EXAMPLE OF 21ST CENTURY LIVING IN A REPURPOSED STRUCTURE.
